Co-processed Particles: An Approach to Transform Poor Tableting Properties

Ira Buckner, Duquesne University

The role of co-processing in improving tablet mechanical properties was investigated in this work. Gabapentin was used as a model compound with low tensile strength, strain rate sensitivity, relatively high ejection force and a tendency for tablet capping. A co-processed system containing > 99% gabapentin demonstrated improved tableting properties. The improved behavior is consistent with enhanced inter-particle bonding and reduced die-wall friction resulting from particle-surface modification.
